LISA STORY 4.jpeg

My path into senior living didn’t start when I got my real estate license—it started when I was just 13 years old. Growing up, while other kids were running around outside, I was the one pulling up a chair to sit with my older relatives. I can still recall the sweet smell of my Aunt Josie’s perfume and the soft, familiar clinking of her bangle bracelets as she moved. I was completely captivated by her, my uncles, grandma, and grandpa—adoring their wisdom, their warmth, and above all, their stories.

Driven by that love, I decided at 13 to volunteer at Carmel Nursing Home, our local nursing home. I vividly remember walking a mile and a half down the road, so excited to spend time with the residents. But when I arrived, a nun at the door looked at me and bluntly turned me away: "We don't need any more candy stripers." I cried the entire mile and a half home. That rejection broke my heart, but it never broke my love for older adults or my deep respect for their history.

Fast forward to 2001: my youngest son was entering kindergarten, and while I was playing tennis three times a week, I knew deep down I wanted to do something more meaningful. One day, I noticed a trailer sitting on a property across the street from my children’s school where they were building an assisted living community—Sunrise of Lincroft.

I walked right over to inquire about joining their team. They had just filled the Director of Community Relations role, but they told me that with my sales background, I would be perfect for that position —explaining that they "hire for a heart and can teach the rest." They mentioned I was welcome to start by volunteering, and I jumped at the opportunity.shortly thereafter they asked me to become a " caregiver for dementia residents".

Determined to learn from the ground up, I began as a volunteer, became a caregiver in the Memory Care neighborhood, and earned my certification in dementia care. My passion and dedication eventually led me to become the Director of Sales for the community.

While working at Sunrise for many years  I often met families who came through the doors searching for care for their loved ones, but simply couldn't afford it. It weighed heavily on me, and I realized I needed to help all people—whether they had money or not. That’s when I heard about a small startup company called A Place for Mom. I took a leap of faith and became their 4th Senior Living Advisor covering New York and New Jersey, dedicated to guiding every family toward the right care solution regardless of their budget.

Decades later, that same heart drives my work every single day. Helping seniors and their families navigate the transition out of a longtime home and into their next chapter is deeply personal to me. I treat every family with the patience, honor, and dedicated care they deserve during such a major life transition.
